Physical Therapy

Education in Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is the art and science of physical treatment by means of therapeutic exercise, instruction, and physical modalities. Physical Therapy provides services to people and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout one's lifespan.
In Japan in 1963, the first PT program was established in Tokyo – so, the history of Japanese PT education spans 52 years. Now there are more than 249 PT education programs, however 95 (38%) of them are still only bachelor degree programs.
Our program is one of these bachelor degree courses and the mission of our program is to nurture physical therapists who have excellent ability in both art and science. We have a distinguished faculty which is experienced in teaching, clinical care and research in the whole area of physical therapy. In addition, we are active in international collaboration with several universities including the University of Colorado, Denver. Our program provides you with an opportunity to challenge getting quality physical therapy skills. Our university has established a Masters Course in April, 2004. Our program prepares graduate students with advanced clinical thinking skills and research abilities that are needed to evolve the physical therapy profession.

Resarch projects in the Department of Physical Therapy

We have been studying a wide range of physical therapy fields. One of the main research areas is aging related issues of the motor system, because Japan is the most aged nation in the world and Yamagata is one of most aged prefectures in Japan.
Regarding research interests of individual professors, please refer to the faculty section of our homepage
