Research Areas My research focuses on understanding the causes of psychiatric disorders and reorganizing the treatment process based on new insights. Specifically, I employ a computational neuroscience approach. Many psychiatric conditions have seen dramatic advances in research in recent years. For example, while schizophrenia was once thought to stem from dopamine overproduction, a more recent integrative model suggests that it results from the interaction of genetic, neurodevelopmental, and environmental factors. Anatomical understanding of such disorders increasingly relies on models such as the cortico-thalamo-cortical loop or functional circuits that include the striatum and midbrain dopaminergic systems.
In my work, I use mathematical models to simulate states associated with psychiatric disorders, recreating the anatomical structure of the cortex and subcortical regions. Until a few years ago, these simulations took weeks to compute, but now they can be completed in just a few days, expanding the scope of my research. It’s possible that such work could contribute to the development of new neuromodulation approaches.
